If the decoration sits inside a recess, a tight curve, or a molded pocket that a flat printhead physically can't clear, pad printing's deformable silicone pad is still the more reliable way to get ink where it needs to go — even though it means living with one or two spot colors instead of full color.
Pad printing starts with an etched steel or polymer plate called a cliché. Ink fills the etched image, a squeegee wipes the flat surface clean, and a silicone pad presses onto the plate to pick up the ink, then presses onto the part to deposit it. That pad is soft and compressible — it's the reason pad printing can decorate the inside of a dimpled golf ball or a slightly concave dial face that a rigid tool couldn't touch.
UV printing keeps the print head at a fixed standoff height above the part and jets ink straight from a digital file, curing each layer instantly under UV light. On a flat panel that's simple. On a cylindrical part like a bottle or tumbler, a rotary jig spins the item under the head to wrap the graphic around it. UV printing lays down full CMYK plus white in a single pass, so photographic detail and multi-color artwork are native rather than a stacked, registration-sensitive workaround.
For a single simple spot-color logo at very high volume, pad printing's per-unit cost is often lower once the cliché is made — thin ink deposit, fast cycle time on a dedicated machine. UV printing's advantage is that setup cost stays flat regardless of quantity or how often the design changes, so it wins on short runs, frequent changes, and multi-color artwork even at moderate volume.
Yes, and it's a common split. A manufacturer might pad-print a one-color logo into a molded recess where the pad reaches but a flatbed head can't, then UV-print a full-color label or wrap graphic on a flatter face of the same part. Ask us which split fits your part.
