A UV flatbed printer needs the substrate to pass under the print head within a few millimeters of clearance, which a compound-curved cab, fender, or box corner can't do. What it does well is the rigid, replaceable components: door panels, box truck side panels, trailer doors, and DOT placards printed on aluminum composite or similar sheet stock, then mounted to the vehicle. Full-body coverage still belongs to vinyl wrap or paint.
The workflow is straightforward: a flat panel — usually aluminum composite for its rigidity, light weight, and weather resistance — is UV printed with the company name, logo, phone number, and any required DOT information, then mounted to a flat section of the vehicle with adhesive, rivets, or a magnetic backing. Because the panel is pre-shaped and finished before it ever touches the vehicle, edges are clean and there's no film to lift or bubble the way a laminated decal can over time. The panel approach has a real limit worth stating plainly: it does not replace a wrap for a company that wants full vehicle coverage, and it isn't the right call for anything that has to flex around a wheel well, mirror mount, or door seam. Where it wins is consistency and swap-ability — a panel that ages, gets damaged, or needs a new phone number can be reprinted and remounted without touching the rest of the vehicle's finish, and the same exact color and file ships to every truck in a growing fleet.

Not on the body itself. A UV flatbed printer needs a flat or near-flat substrate to pass under the print head, and a cab, fender, or box corner is compound-curved sheet metal. That's why vehicle wraps and paint still dominate for the exterior body — UV printing fits the flat, rigid components instead.
FMCSA regulation 390.21 requires the USDOT number and legal carrier name on both sides of the power unit, in letters at least 2 inches tall that sharply contrast with the background and stay legible from 50 feet in daylight. Placement has to stay within the door panel — glass, fenders, and rear panels don't satisfy the rule.
