It's the wrong tool for anything structural or safety-certified: a bracket, a load-bearing component, or a part that has to carry a DOT or FMVSS marking needs its required finish, not a decorative coating standing in for it. Knowing which category a part falls into before quoting the job saves a conversation nobody wants to have after the part is printed.
UV-curable ink is jetted straight onto the part and cured instantly by UV light as it's laid down, then sealed under a protective top coat. Nothing is laminated or wrapped over the surface, so there's no film edge to lift in a door jamb or curl under a heat cycle the way an applied vinyl graphic can. What determines whether the bond holds is the same variable it is on any substrate: surface prep, matched to whatever material and finish the part actually arrived in.
Automotive parts show up in more material variety than most other categories Polyprint prints — painted and anodized aluminum trim, ABS and polycarbonate interior pieces, textured dash and door plastics, and polypropylene on bumper covers and some interior components. ABS and polycarbonate trim pieces, painted or anodized aluminum trim, and textured interior plastics generally print well with standard cleaning. Polypropylene parts have low surface energy and need a primer or corona/plasma treatment first. Chrome-plated and heavily oiled parts need degreasing and often an adhesion promoter.
The cured coating is tested for zero surface change after 3000 hours of accelerated UV weathering and rated 6H on the pencil hardness scale. That said, a closed vehicle in direct sun is a genuinely harsh environment. For dash-level and other high-heat interior placements, tell us the mounting location so we can flag the right build.
No. UV printing is a decorative and branding process, not a certified coating or safety-marking system. Structural components and parts requiring DOT, FMVSS, or OEM safety certification should not be printed with a decorative process as a substitute for their required finish or markings.
