File readiness is the biggest lever most clients don't realize they're pulling. A file with missing bleed, an unresolved white-ink layer, or a font that wasn't embedded doesn't fail — it comes back for a fix, and that round-trip is often the single biggest chunk of a job's total timeline. After that, it's substrate familiarity and job complexity. A material we run often needs no new color profiling; a first-time substrate does. A single-pass print is faster than a job that needs a white underbase, color, and a protective top coat layered in sequence. And some materials need a pre-treatment step — rubber and silicone need plasma or corona treatment immediately before printing, which has to happen in the same production window and can't be done ahead of the run.

There's no single number that applies across every job, and any vendor who quotes one before seeing the file and substrate is guessing. A small, simple, already-proofed one-pass print moves faster than a multi-color job on a substrate the shop hasn't run before. Ask for a turnaround estimate with your quote request — it should come with a reason attached, not just a date.
Send print-ready files the first time. A proofing round-trip over missing bleed, an unembedded font, or a missing white-ink layer is one of the most common things that adds days to a job that didn't need to take that long. Approving a proof the same day it's sent matters just as much — a proof sitting unanswered is often the real bottleneck, not the print itself.
Sometimes, for a very small, simple, already-proofed job that fits into an open slot — but it's not something to plan around before checking. Most jobs, urgent or not, still go through setup, color profiling if the substrate is new, and a cure or coating step that takes the time it takes.
It can, and it's worth asking upfront rather than after the fact. Moving a job ahead of others already scheduled sometimes means displacing another client's run, and whether that carries a fee depends on how disruptive the request is to the current queue.
