What sets it apart is what happens to the ink after it leaves the nozzle: UV ink cures instantly under a UV lamp built into the print carriage, while standard digital ink air-dries or gets absorbed into the material over time. That one difference is the whole story — it's why UV can print directly on aluminum, glass, and acrylic that a standard digital run would leave wet or simply couldn't hold.
Standard digital ink — aqueous, solvent, or latex — needs the material to either soak it up or hold it still while the liquid carrier evaporates. That's why it's built around paper, canvas, uncoated banner vinyl, and fabric: materials with some porosity or coating designed to accept ink. UV-curable ink skips that step entirely. A UV lamp mounted right behind the print head hits the ink with light the instant it lands, hardening it into a solid film in a fraction of a second — whether the surface underneath is porous or not.
That's the reason UV can go straight onto aluminum, glass, and acrylic — surfaces a standard digital run would leave sitting in wet ink with nowhere to go. It's not a better version of digital printing; it's a different curing mechanism solving a different substrate problem.

Most of the confusion isn't technical — it's that a print shop advertising "digital printing" almost always means standard wide-format aqueous, solvent, or latex printing on paper or vinyl roll stock. UV gets listed as a separate service because it runs on different hardware with a UV curing lamp, not because it's a competing category of "digital." When a quote separates the two, it's describing two curing processes on the same underlying digital workflow, not two different levels of print quality.
Where this actually costs money: sending a rigid panel job to a standard digital press means printing on film first, then mounting and laminating it onto the panel by hand — labor that direct UV skips by printing straight onto the substrate a business already has. Assuming UV costs more because it sounds newer is a common mistake; on a rigid one-off, it's often the cheaper path once mounting labor is priced in.
