The Short Answer

We Print Memorial Plaques and Funeral Home Signage. Material and Exposure Decide the Job.

UV printing for funeral homes and memorial products covers two related jobs: full-color photographic plaques — acrylic, bronze, or stainless steel, with a portrait, a name, and dates — and the everyday signage a funeral home or memorial garden runs, from chapel nameplates to donation-wall panels to parking and wayfinding signs. Both print on the same UV flatbed process used across this site: ink jetted and cured layer by layer directly onto the substrate, no plate, no minimum run, one-off pieces priced the same way as a batch. The decision that actually matters is where the piece lives. Indoor and covered-porch pieces are a straightforward spec. A marker meant to sit in an open cemetery for decades is a different conversation, and we will have it honestly rather than sell every plaque as permanent.

Materials

Acrylic, Bronze, or Stainless — Three Different Looks, Three Different Budgets

Clear or frosted acrylic is the entry point and the most common choice for a full-color photo plaque — it takes UV ink cleanly, gives a modern, glass-like presentation, and costs meaningfully less than a metal alternative, which matters on a category where families are often ordering under time pressure and on a set budget. Our UV printing on acrylic guide covers the adhesion and clarity side of that substrate in more depth.

Bronze, stainless steel, and brass plaques take the same full-color printing directly onto the metal face rather than through a cast or etched process. That is a different aesthetic — a photographic image sits on a polished or brushed metal ground instead of being rendered as a relief or an etched line — and it is priced differently than traditional cast bronze. Both routes are legitimate memorial products; they are not the same product, and a family or funeral director choosing between them should know that going in. Our metal surface printing guide has the adhesion and prep detail for plaques on bronze, steel, or aluminum.

Every one of these materials needs a white ink layer under the color when the ground is reflective, dark, or tinted — the same underbase logic covered on our white ink and opaque underprinting page. Skip it on brushed stainless and a portrait comes back looking washed out and gray instead of true to the photograph submitted.

Acrylic — lowest cost, clean modern look, fastest turnaround
Bronze / stainless / brass — premium metal face, different look than cast bronze
White underbase required on reflective or dark grounds
Single-piece and small-batch orders priced the same way — no plate cost
Indoor-rated as the default spec; outdoor requires a separate conversation

Indoor and Covered vs. Open Cemetery — Not the Same Spec

The single most important question on a memorial job is where the piece will actually sit, and for how long, with no one maintaining it.

Indoor and Covered — The Standard Spec

A UV-printed portrait plaque mounted in a chapel, a mausoleum interior, a lobby, or under a porch roof is the job this process is built for. Standard UV ink and finish hold color and detail well in that environment without any special upgrade, and this is the spec we quote by default because it is the spec most memorial and signage orders actually need.

Open Cemetery — A Separate Conversation

Full sun, rain, and freeze-thaw cycling in an open cemetery setting is a genuinely harder environment. UV-stable inks and a protective clear topcoat should be specified up front for that use, not requested after a piece has already faded. Even with that upgrade, we are not going to promise a UV-printed photo plaque will outlast a well-made cast or etched bronze marker over decades of unattended outdoor exposure — that remains the more proven traditional choice for a permanent, no-maintenance cemetery marker, and we will say so rather than upsell a UV print into a category it was not built for.

Combining Engraving and UV Print

Engraving and UV printing stack on the same piece the same way they do on the recognition and awards work covered on our awards and trophy printing guide. A name, dates, and a decorative border are laser engraved or etched into the plaque for a permanent, high-contrast mark, and a full-color photograph or artwork prints on the same face. Engraving happens first; printing happens after, so the cured ink is never exposed to laser heat.

What We Will Not Do With the Order

We will not quote a lightweight acrylic photo plaque for an unsheltered cemetery placement without flagging the exposure risk, and we will not call a UV-printed piece a giclée to make it sound more premium on an invoice — a giclée is an aqueous inkjet print on fine-art paper or canvas, a different product entirely. A submitted photograph gets color-matched and proofed before full production; see our color matching guide for how that process works on a portrait rather than a brand logo.

Beyond the Plaque

Funeral Home Signage Runs on the Same Process

A memorial plaque is the highest-emotion order a funeral home places, but it is rarely the only print job on the property.

Chapel and viewing room nameplates, service-day directional signs, donation and memorial-wall recognition panels, and general facility wayfinding all print on the same acrylic, metal, or wood substrates covered elsewhere on this site — not a separate process just because the building is a funeral home. Interior signage follows standard indoor specs. A monument sign or address marker at the entrance gets the same outdoor exposure questions as an open-cemetery plaque, because it is sitting in the same weather.

Facilities operating a memorial garden or an outdoor columbarium wall sometimes want stone rather than metal or acrylic for that specific area — full-color portraits on granite, alongside or instead of traditional etching, are covered on our UV printing on stone and granite guide, including the sealer and adhesion-promoter prep that stone needs before it will hold ink at all. Tell us the full scope of what a location needs — plaques, signage, and any stone element — and we will quote it as one project instead of three unrelated ones.

When to Quote

What We Need Before We Price a Memorial or Signage Order

We quote from the material, the placement, and the artwork — not from a general request for "a plaque." Send the list below and you get a real spec and a real number.

Send This

  • Plaque or sign size, and quantity if it's a batch order
  • Material preference — acrylic, bronze, stainless, brass, or open to a recommendation
  • Placement: indoor, covered outdoor, or open cemetery/exterior exposure
  • Whether engraved text or a border should be combined with the printed portrait
  • Source photograph or artwork, and its resolution
  • Turnaround needed — funeral timelines are frequently urgent, and we plan around that

We Will Tell You

  • Which material fits the budget and the placement
  • Whether the piece needs a UV-stable ink upgrade and clear topcoat for outdoor service
  • Whether cast or etched bronze is the more honest choice for a permanent unattended marker
  • Realistic turnaround given engraving, printing, and any combined process

We take US memorial and signage orders through the same contact form as every other surface. If you are still choosing a material, start at the surfaces hub.

Applications for UV Printing at Funeral Homes & Memorial Sites

These are the memorial and facility jobs we actually want to quote. If your piece is a permanent unattended bronze cemetery marker, read the exposure section above before you order.

Memorial Products

  • Full-color portrait plaques on acrylic, bronze, stainless, or brass
  • Combined engraved-name and printed-portrait pieces
  • Columbarium niche plates and memorial-wall panels

Facility Signage

  • Chapel and viewing room nameplates
  • Service-day directional and wayfinding signs
  • Donation recognition panels and lobby displays

Outdoor Memorial Sites

  • Entrance monument signs and address markers
  • Memorial garden signage under a UV-stable, topcoated spec
  • Granite memorial elements — see our stone and granite guide for that material

What This Page Is Not

  • Not a substitute for cast or etched bronze on a permanent unattended cemetery marker
  • Not a giclée or fine-art paper print — this is a rigid-substrate plaque process
  • Not funeral programs or paper keepsakes — those are a print-shop job, not a UV flatbed one
FAQ

UV Printing for Funeral Homes & Memorial Products — Common Questions

What materials can a memorial plaque be UV printed on?

Clear or frosted acrylic is the most common and most affordable option and takes a full-color photographic portrait well. Bronze, stainless steel, and brass plaques also accept full-color UV printing directly on the metal face, which is a different look and a different price point than a cast or etched bronze marker. All three take white ink underneath color so a portrait reads accurately on a reflective or tinted surface.

Is a UV-printed memorial plaque durable enough for an outdoor cemetery setting?

Not as a default assumption. UV-printed photos on metal or acrylic hold up well indoors or under cover; full sun, rain, and freeze-thaw cycling in an open cemetery are a harder environment that calls for UV-stable inks and a protective clear topcoat specified up front. For a marker that has to survive decades in the open with no maintenance, cast or etched bronze remains the more proven traditional choice — we will tell you plainly when that is the better spec than a UV print.

Can you combine an engraved name with a UV-printed portrait on the same plaque?

Yes, and it is a common combination. A name, dates, and a border are laser engraved or etched into the plaque for a permanent, high-contrast mark, while a full-color photograph or artwork is UV printed on the same face. Engraving generally happens first, then printing, so the printed area is not exposed to laser heat after the ink is cured.

What is the difference between a UV-printed photo plaque and a giclée print?

A giclée is an aqueous pigment inkjet print on fine-art paper or canvas, meant for framed display — not a cured ink film on a rigid plaque. UV printing cures ink instantly onto acrylic, metal, or another rigid substrate, producing a plaque or marker rather than a framed print. We will not sell a UV-printed plaque as a giclée, and we will not sell a paper giclée as something you can mount outdoors.

Do you print funeral home signage as well as memorial plaques?

Yes. Directional and service signage, chapel and viewing room nameplates, donation and memorial-wall panels, and lobby wayfinding all print on the same acrylic, metal, or wood substrates covered elsewhere on this site. Signage that stays inside the building follows standard interior specs; anything mounted outside gets the same outdoor exposure questions we ask for a plaque. Request a quote here.
