Coastal marine environments are hard on materials in a way most commercial signage locations aren't — constant humidity, salt in the air even away from direct spray, and daily sun exposure without the shade an inland storefront might get. Gelcoat on boats is a useful comparison point: it has some built-in UV resistance, but the stabilizers in it are generally expected to deplete within two to three years without ongoing maintenance like wax or ceramic coating, after which fading and surface chalking follow. That's not a knock on gelcoat — it's a reminder that any material in this environment, printed or not, needs a maintenance plan matched to its exposure.
For fixed signage rather than the vessel itself, the substrate decision matters more than most buyers expect. Mild or untreated steel corrodes in salt air regardless of coating quality, and that corrosion tends to start at cut edges or fastener holes and work outward — which can undercut a print from the substrate side even if the printed surface itself is holding up fine. Marine-grade anodized aluminum, HDPE, or acrylic panel is what we recommend for dock and coastal signage specifically because the base material resists that failure mode on its own, before the print finish is even part of the conversation.
Our own UV coating is tested to show no observable surface change after 3000 hours of accelerated UV weathering — a relevant spec for the printed graphic on exterior dock and lot signage. That number describes the print finish, not the underlying panel's corrosion resistance, which is exactly why the substrate grade and mounting hardware get specified as carefully as the artwork on anything installed at a marina.
Wrong substrate for the environment. The single most common failure isn't the print at all — it's specifying a standard indoor-grade metal or a mild steel panel for a location that sees salt air daily. Confirming marine-grade aluminum, HDPE, or acrylic before the order goes to production is the fix, not something to catch after installation.
Rust streaking from mounting hardware. A perfectly printed, correctly specified panel can still look bad within a year if it's hung with standard zinc-plated screws instead of marine-grade stainless. The corroding fastener stains the panel face below it, which reads as a signage failure even though the print and substrate did everything right.
Permanent print on a pricing or seasonal sign. The same mismatch that shows up at auto dealerships happens at boat dealers — printing current-model pricing or a seasonal promotion as if it were permanent branding means paying to reprint the whole fixture every time the offer changes. A frame or insert system solves this the same way it does in a car showroom.
Treating the panel like it needs to be waterproof ink rather than a properly built assembly. Buyers sometimes ask specifically for "waterproof ink," but the print finish is only one part of what keeps marina signage looking good for years — substrate corrosion resistance, hardware, and even how the panel is sealed at cut edges matter as much as anything in the ink itself. Framing the request around the whole assembly, not just the ink, gets a better result than chasing a single marketing spec.

If the project is genuinely about the vessel — hull graphics, deck numbering, cabin branding, anything applied to the boat itself rather than to a dock, building, or fixture — that's a marine vinyl wrap or gelcoat specialist's work, not ours. Those materials are built to flex with a hull, handle constant water contact, and in some cases go below the waterline, none of which a flatbed UV-printed panel is designed for. We'll say so directly if a request comes in for vessel graphics rather than trying to force it into a process that isn't built for it.
