That's indirect contact, and standard ink is the right, unremarkable answer. A print that sits where food is placed directly — inside a bowl, on a cutting surface, at a drinkware rim — is a genuinely different job that needs a low-migration, food-contact-compliant ink system specified up front, not assumed after the fact.
Most confusion here comes from treating "food safe" as a property of an ink instead of a property of a use case. UV ink cures as a hard, chemically bonded film sitting on top of a substrate, and whether that matters for food safety depends entirely on whether food, or a wet food surface, actually presses against the printed area. A logo on the outside of a to-go container, a branded exterior on a cutting board, a printed serving tray's rim below the food well — none of these put ink in the path of what gets eaten, and standard ink is the correct, ordinary choice for all of them.
Direct food contact is a narrower category: the print is on the surface food or a wet food-contact liquid actually touches, with enough duration or repetition that migration into the food is a real question, not a hypothetical one. A cutting board's actual cutting face, the interior of a serving bowl, a drinkware rim that lips contact directly — these need an ink system the manufacturer specifically documents as food-contact compliant, which is a different product than the standard UV ink used for the rest of a catalog. Substrate choice doesn't solve this on its own; a food-safe cutting board blank printed with standard ink on its cutting face is still standard ink on a direct-contact surface.

Solid surface and similar dense, non-porous materials are common choices for cutting boards and food-prep surfaces precisely because they're durable and easy to keep clean — but printing on one doesn't change the food-contact question on its own.
