The search that lands people here is often "canvas for UV ink." That phrase is doing real work. A UV-curable film needs a receptor. Mills that actually sell printable canvas say so on the spec sheet. Innova's IFA 96 poly-cotton canvas is sold with an eco-solvent, latex, and UV ink compatible coating written for stretching, banners, and décor. Magic's 3770 GFCVM satin canvas is the same class of product from another mill: a 15 mil poly/cotton stretch canvas specified for latex, UV, solvent, and eco-solvent printers, with a coating written for production stretching and "no edge cracking when folded." Those are manufacturer claims about their stock, not a Polyprint house rating. They are why this page talks about primed canvas instead of any cloth that happens to look like art supply.
Roland DG splits the production path the same way a shop does on the floor. Their canvas application notes describe printing directly onto ready-made canvases with VersaUV flatbeds, or printing onto canvas material with inkjet printers to make custom-sized prints. Mimaki's industrial canvas notes put UV-LED flatbeds on the same job, from a tabletop UJF bed up through the JFX series, and they publish a media-thickness window for those beds — the JFX-200 series up to 1.97 inches thick, the JFX600-2513 up to 2.36 inches — because a pre-stretched frame is a different object than a roll of goods. We are not listing those machines as "our press." We are using the OEM pages for the process fact: canvas prints either as a roll or as a finished, already-stretched object, and the bed has to clear the bar thickness. Mimaki's UV-curable ink page is equally plain about cure: the ink is cured and adhered by UV radiation, and the print is already dried when it comes out of the printer. That is the operational reason buyers ask for UV on canvas instead of aqueous inkjet — finishing does not wait on a dry-time queue. It is also why stretch and roll have to be specified up front. A cured film is a film. Hard UV inks are written for rigid plates; soft, flexible UV inks are written for media that will bend. Mimaki says that split out loud. We match the job to the stock and the finish. We do not publish a house ink brand, a flexibility percentage, or an adhesion score as if one number covered every canvas weave.
Canvas for UV ink must meet three criteria: the receptor coating must be specified for UV-curable inks by the mill, the coating must be compatible with the finish (stretch-rated for wraps, roll-rated for banners), and the substrate weight and weave must support the intended application without cracking or delamination. A 370 gsm poly-cotton with a UV-compatible receptor is the industry standard for production canvas printing. Lighter canvases (under 300 gsm) are more prone to ink adhesion issues and cracking on stretch. Heavier canvases (over 400 gsm) add cost and shipping weight without proportional durability gains. The sweet spot for most jobs is 350–380 gsm with a documented UV-compatible coating from a recognized mill like Innova, Magic, or Epson.

The same ink, the same coated canvas, two completely different finishes. Pick the finish before anyone spends time on the file.
A gallery wrap folds printed canvas around a stretcher bar. That fold is the stress test. Innova writes IFA 96 "with stretched canvas in mind" and says the coating does not crack when stretched over wooden bars; the datasheet repeats a high level of crack resistance and lists gallery wraps as an application. Magic's GFCVM page sells the same promise in different words: excellent flexibility for stretching, compatible with production stretching equipment, no edge cracking when folded. Those claims are why stretch-rated canvas exists. They are not a license to ignore wrap depth. A shallow wrap on a ¾-inch bar is a different radius than a 1.5-inch or 2-inch deep wrap with heavy ink coverage wrapping the corner. If the piece is already stretched and you want us to print the face on a flatbed, say that — bar thickness and overall height become the first question, not the last.
Innova also sells that same coated poly-cotton as banner stock: punch eyelets, hang it, or use it as an alternative to film in pop-up display. A roll is kinder than a tight stretcher corner if the core is large enough and the ink film is not piled on. A small-diameter roll under a heavy flood of ink is how a shop creates its own craze lines. Tell us the ship method and the hang method. Hems, pole pockets, and grommet spacing belong on the quote the same way wrap depth does. Outdoor canvas usually fails at those edges first — the mill talking about eyelets is the hint — not as a mysterious fade number we are going to invent here.
A canvas face glued or stapled to a rigid panel never takes the corner fold. That is the low-drama finish for photo panels, point-of-sale, and most interior brand graphics. If you do not need the wrap look, do not pay for the wrap risk. We will quote a flat mount as a flat mount.
We will not silently print a file built for a flat 24×36 and then stretch it around a deep bar so the faces and corners steal three inches of the image. We will not treat raw, unprimed cotton as interchangeable with a UV-receptive mill canvas. And we will not call a UV-cured canvas a giclée so it looks better on a certificate. Opacity and exposure are spec lines, not afterthoughts. Guessing them after the file is trapped is how a natural-canvas banner comes back looking muddy.
White-primed digital canvas already gives CMYK a bright page. Natural, unbleached, or dyed canvas does not. Mimaki's UV ink notes describe white as the base layer that makes color read on a transparent or transmissive face; without it, printed color is a tint, not a solid. The same logic applies when the "page" is the color of the cloth. A full white flood or a spot underbase keeps brand color accurate on tinted weaves. No white leaves the cloth showing through. That is a choice you make on the quote, the same way you choose wrap depth. Indoor versus outdoor is the other line we will not invent a warranty around. Innova's IFA 96 product copy is the honest manufacturer language: that coated poly-cotton, printed with UV, latex, or eco-solvent ink, is sold for long-term interior signage or short-term exterior banners. We are not turning "short-term exterior" into a year-count, an outdoor warranty, or a fade rating. How long a UV print lasts, and how you clean it, belongs on UV printing durability and care and on the quote for the actual exposure — indoor, covered outdoor, or full sun — plus how the piece is hung. A canvas banner that will fly in wind needs reinforced hems and sane grommet spacing. A lobby wrap that never sees weather does not. Those are different jobs.
Giclée is the third thing this page will not steal. PermaJet's trade write-up of Fine Art Trade Guild practice describes a giclée-quality print as aqueous pigment inkjet on a qualifying fine-art sheet, not a UV-cured film. The Guild's own ArtSure / Guild Print Standards talk about approved inks, a 250 gsm minimum substrate, pH, and Blue Wool lightfastness for digital fine-art editions. UV-on-canvas can be a sharp, durable commercial graphic. It is the wrong process to invoice as giclée. If that label is the purchase order, say so. If it is not, we will print the UV job and call it a UV job.

No. In trade use, giclée is archival aqueous pigment inkjet on a qualifying fine-art paper or canvas, not a UV-cured film. The Fine Art Trade Guild's digital-print standards (ArtSure) are written around approved inks, substrate weight, pH, and lightfastness for that market. If a client needs the giclée label on an invoice or a certificate of authenticity, say so — that is a different process, and we will not dress a UV canvas job up as giclée.
