The search that lands people here is often “UV printing on tumblers.” That phrase is a rotary job, not a flat panel. Mimaki’s Kebab option for its UJF-series UV flatbeds is written for exactly this class of work: the system mounts on the print table and enables 360-degree direct UV printing on the sides of cylindrical materials such as bottles and tumblers while the object rotates. The Kebab HS page adds tapered materials — glasses and cups — and a shaft that fixes the workpiece; the Europe page lists tumblers, thermos bottles, metal cups, and glasses among the applications. Those are manufacturer claims about a rotary attachment, not a Polyprint house machine list. We are using the OEM pages for the process fact: drinkware prints as a rotating object, not as a sheet on a bed.
Roland DG describes the same job from a dedicated cylindrical press. The VersaObject RC-300 series is sold as a UV cylindrical printer for direct decoration of bottles, drinkware, and other cylindrical, tapered, and curved-profile products. Roland’s own copy says the press prints continuously around the object as it rotates, rather than building the image in separate strips, and it lists tapered cups, tumblers, and flasks as the objects that conventional rotary systems struggle with. The same company’s MO-series flatbed notes an optional rotary axis for bottles and other cylindrical items. Again: process language, not “our model.” If a buyer asks what machine we run, the honest answer is on the quote for that blank — not a catalog number published here as if one press covered every diameter and taper.
Mimaki’s UV-curable ink page is the reason the print is handleable when it leaves the station: the ink is cured and adhered by UV radiation, and the print is already dried when it comes out of the printer. That page also states the substrate range we actually use on drinkware — non-absorbent materials including plastic, glass, and metal — and the white-ink rule that matters on a dark or clear cup: white is the base layer that makes color read. Hard UV films are written for rigid plates; softer films are written for media that will bend. A stainless tumbler is a rigid wall. A silicone sleeve on that tumbler is not. We match the film to the face we are printing. We do not publish a house ink brand, an adhesion score, or a dishwasher-cycle rating as if one number covered every blank.

The same ink, two completely different fixtures. Pick the wall profile and the wrap before anyone spends time on the file.
A straight-wall tumbler or can-shaped bottle is the clean rotary case: circumference is constant, the fixture can hold true, and a wrap that was built to the measured diameter will close if the rotation stays honest. A tapered pint, stemless glass, or flask is a different object. Circumference changes from rim to base. Mimaki’s Kebab HS copy is explicit about that limit — tapered media up to a published gradient, plus taper-warp correction in the RIP — and Roland’s RC-300 page exists in part because conventional rotary systems struggle with tapered and curved-profile drinkware. Those OEM windows are their windows, not a Polyprint capability claim. What we will do is refuse to price a taper as if it were a soup can. Send the wall profile, or a dimensioned photo, and say whether the graphic has to run through the slope.
A 360-degree wrap only closes cleanly if the artwork tiles at the start and end of the rotation and the jig holds circular alignment through the pass. Any drift shows up as a visible line or a color mismatch. Busy or repeating patterns hide a slight seam. Straight horizontals and edge-to-edge type do not. A partial wrap or a flat medallion on one face avoids that close entirely — that is often the right call for a logo that does not need to own the whole cup. Handles, lids, and silicone sleeves are keep-out zones unless we have agreed they are part of the print. A handled mug is a fixture problem first and an artwork problem second.
We will not silently stretch a flat 11-inch rectangle around a taper and hope the type still sits level. We will not treat a powder-coated blank, a bare stainless blank, and a glass pint as interchangeable “drinkware.” And we will not call a UV film on the outside of a cup a sublimation print so it sounds more familiar on a purchase order. If the client already bought coated sublimation blanks, say that — the process may change, or those blanks may still take UV. If they did not, do not buy a coated inventory just to decorate a short run.
The same rotary idea prints a rigid glass or PET bottle when the goal is label-free packaging. That is a different purchase order: CPG, cosmetics, spirits, a container that has to survive a fill line. It lives on our UV printing on bottles and containers page. Opacity, dishwashers, and rims are spec lines. Guessing them after the file is trapped is how a black tumbler comes back looking like a tint.
Dark, metallic, and clear drinkware do not give CMYK a white page. Mimaki’s UV ink notes describe white as the base layer that makes color read on a transparent or transmissive face; without it, printed color is a tint. Roland’s cylindrical page makes the same point as “high-opacity white” on transparent, colored, and dark objects, and it sells a printable primer for demanding materials such as stainless steel, glass, metal, and plastics. We use that logic on the quote. A full white flood or a spot underbase keeps brand color accurate on powder-coated black or raw metal. No white leaves the blank showing through. That is a choice you make before we print, the same way you choose wrap versus medallion. The mechanics — flood versus spot, when a second hit of white is worth it — live on our white ink and opaque underprinting page. Send the blank color and we will say which of those belongs on this job.
Dishwasher use is the other line we will not invent a warranty around. Cured UV ink sits as a bonded surface film. It does not diffuse into a polymer the way sublimation dye does. Heat and detergent can dull or lift an uncoated print over time. A clear overcoat after printing is the usual way to improve wash durability — Roland lists gloss as a decorative and protective layer on cylindrical work; Mimaki’s Kebab spec tells shops to test adhesion and weather resistance because they vary by ink and substrate, and to primer some materials before printing. We will specify a topcoat when you tell us the cup has to see a dishwasher. We will not publish a house cycle count, a fade-hour rating, or a “dishwasher-safe” badge that is not tied to the actual blank and coating on the quote. How long a UV print lasts, and how you clean it, belongs on UV printing durability and care and on the testing page. Hand-wash-only is the honest default if you do not ask for the overcoat.
Food contact is a third thing this page will not steal. A wrap that stays on the exterior wall, below where lips contact the piece, is ordinary indirect contact and prints with standard ink. A graphic that crosses the rim, or sits where a wet mouth or food actually touches the film, is a different ink conversation. We will not stamp “food safe” on a tumbler because the blank is stainless. Tell us where the art sits relative to the rim.

There is no plate or screen forcing a volume floor, so a handful of units or a single sample is workable. The real cost at low volume is rotary fixture setup and color profiling per blank type — a fixed cost on five pieces or five hundred. Batching several SKUs of the same blank into one run is how that setup gets shared. The general cost logic lives on our minimum order quantity page. It only works on blanks made with that coating, it needs a bake or heat-press cycle, and the dye is translucent, so it wants a light-colored coating. UV printing jets ink and cures it under UV light on the object, with no bake step, and can lay an opaque white base first so color reads on dark, metallic, or clear drinkware. A taper changes the circumference from rim to base, so the artwork has to be built for that slope and the fixture has to hold the piece without walking. OEM rotary systems that print tumblers and glassware publish a taper limit and a warp-correction step for that reason. Send wall profile — straight, tapered, or handled — before we price a full wrap as if it were a can.
