That range isn't fixed by the ink alone — the substrate, the coating spec, and how the surface gets cleaned over its life all move the number up or down. The single biggest thing that shortens a UV print's real-world life isn't UV exposure, it's the wrong cleaning product used out of habit: abrasive pads and strong solvents erode a protective coating far faster than sunlight does.
Ink cure quality is the baseline: a properly cured UV ink film is chemically bonded and hard from the moment it leaves the printer, not something that "sets" over time the way some coatings do. That part is consistent across a well-run production process and isn't something a buyer needs to manage after the fact.
The protective topcoat is where lifespan is actually won or lost. A gloss, satin, or matte UV-stable clear coat sits over the ink and takes the abrasion, UV exposure, and chemical contact that would otherwise hit the print directly. Coating thickness and type should match the environment — a coating specified for indoor signage won't hold up the same way on a south-facing exterior panel, and that mismatch is the most common reason a print underperforms its expected life.
The third variable is entirely in the buyer's hands after delivery: cleaning habits. A surface wiped with mild soap and a soft cloth for years looks the same on year ten as year one. The same surface scrubbed with an abrasive pad or hit regularly with a strong solvent-based cleaner can show visible wear in months, regardless of how good the original ink and coating were.

Carefully, and not up close. A wide fan tip at a safe standoff distance is fine for routine cleaning. A narrow jet held close to the surface can cut into the protective topcoat and, over repeated use, erode the print underneath — the same way pressure washing can strip paint. If frequent pressure washing is part of the maintenance plan, say so at the quoting stage.
Mild soap, water, and a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge handle routine cleaning on every substrate we print. Avoid abrasive scouring pads and powders, and avoid high-pH industrial degreasers or strong solvents, which can soften or lift a UV coating with repeated contact.
Slowly, and mostly outdoors. UV-stable inks resist the light wavelength that causes fading, which is why exterior-rated ink and coating combinations hold color for years. Indoor prints see negligible fade. The fastest way to accelerate fade is direct, unshaded sun exposure paired with an under-specified coating.
Sometimes. If the ink layer is intact and only the topcoat has worn thin, a fresh clear coat can extend service life without a full reprint — most viable on flat, accessible panels.
